Surkhandarya

Surkhandarya region is located in south part of Uzbekistan and borders with Afghanistan.
Occupied territory is 20 800 square kilometres. The region has continental climate with
mild winter and hot summer. Population is more than one and half million people,
majority of which use to inhabit the rural areas. There are 14 districts in the region,
Termez is a centre with population around 95 000 people. The biggest regional towns
are as follows: Denau, Baishun, Sherabad and Shurdji.
Tourist centres: Termez, Denau, Boysun.
BACTRIAN AND KUSHAN EMPIRES ARE WELL-KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD.
TERMEZ WAS ONE OF THE MAIN CENTRES OF THOSE EMPIRES WHICH IS WHY THE 2500TH ANNIVERSARY OF TERMEZ IS INCLUDED IN UNESCO'S REGISTER OF “SIGNIFICANT DATES OF HUMANITY”.
Surkhan, known today as the Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan, is rich with legends.
Even the name “Termez” has its own stories in Bactrian phonetics the word “Tar-Mat” means “City on the Bank”, while in another translation its sounds like “The Iron City”. Both of them have significance because more than two millennia ago Termezians were famous for their skills in metalwork as well as building ships. The country itself was Bactria, stretching from the north
of the present Afghanistan up to the spurs of the Gissar range.
Termez is one of the ancient cities of the world, that has made great contribution
to the development of Silk Road. Just via Termez, the Buddhism was spread to China and Far East. Convenient geographical location of Termez put much attention of the rulers from many countries. That is why, many times it has been exposed to attacks by conquerors. Termez has been destroyed many times, but it rose from its ashes like phoenix to the east of the old settlement site, in the valley of the Surkhandarya River.
A noteworthy characteristic of modern Termez and the entire Surkhandarya region is that in ancient times it showed touches of modernity. So, not far from the city, ancient Buddhist cultural monuments including the dwellings of Buddhist monks, were discovered. Stone steps leading beneath the eastern dome with a diameter of 4-5 metres are no less than 2000 years old.
One of the great Islamic monuments, the tomb of al-Termizi, is located in the semi-circle of Buddhist and later Muslim hermet cells. Termezi lived and developed his great Islamic teaching here, among the Buddhists and Muslims. The tomb and mausoleum of al-Termizi will become like Mecca, not only a sacred place but a fascinating tourist attraction. Local Archaeological Museum that was opened in 2001, puts much attention of numerous tourists. Museum is one of the unique in Central Asia possessing more than 27 000 expositions. Other articles relating to the ancient history and culture of this region is the Buddha sculpture and weapons dating back 100-40 thousand years.
These items were found in the Teshik-Tash caves together with a skeleton of a nine-year old Neanderthal girl.
Tourists will be lucky enough to see with their own eyes more than 200 well-preserved pictures
of the Neanderthal era where in the hunting scenes are depicted.
The Kushan culture left rich traces in world history. It included Termez and many other eastern cities, spreading at the end of the last era, up to India. The most exciting and valuable pieces of evidence of this civilization were mostly found at Dalverzin-tepa located 60 kilometres from city.
These artifacts, some of which are well-preserved silver and gold articles, other precious metal items and precious stones are currently exhibited in museum in Tashkent and Termez.
For the years of independence, great changes took place in Termez making this
city more beautiful and attractive for tourists.
